Enterprise data for AI: screening manuals, logs and sensor data

Much valuable enterprise data contains no consumer information at all: machine telemetry, inspection images, technical manuals. The bigger risks are trade secrets and customer contracts.

Screening operational data

  1. Operational records Telemetry, inspections, manuals.
  2. Customer rights Data generated under customer contracts.
  3. Trade secrets Confidentiality before any sample.

A four-question screen

  1. Would licensing reveal a process you protect as a trade secret?
  2. Was the data generated on customer equipment or under a customer contract that gives them rights?
  3. Do employees appear in it (shift logs, badge data, signatures)?
  4. Can you aggregate, mask or delay the data and keep it useful?

Trade secret status is easy to lose

Trade secret protection depends partly on reasonable secrecy measures. Sharing samples without an NDA, or licensing without confidentiality terms, can undercut that status for the underlying know-how.

Documents and manuals

Internal manuals are usually works made for hire if staff wrote them within their job, but contractor-written material needs a written assignment. Check before calling a document archive a clean text corpus.

How this affects value

Aggregating, masking or delaying data can preserve its usefulness while protecting the know-how that gives it value.
